Book Description

The WOMEN OF A NEW TRIBE project is a homage to the physical and spiritual beauty of the black women we see everyday. It is an attempt to see in a new light and in a new way an incredible group of women. For good reasons it has been called “powerful”, “uplifting” and “long overdue”.

This book is more than a collection of photographs, it is an experience.

Professional Review

The WOMEN OF A NEW TRIBE is a spectacular, powerful, uplifting, dynamic and inspirational photographic exhibition about the beauty and representation of black women. I think that Mr. Jerry Taliaferro did an excellent job depicting black women and I was very fascinated by overall layout of the project. I think that this project is very essential and universal. It serves as a reminder of how black young women should be represented. I believe that some black women undermine the essence of themselves and leave themselves open to be called out of their gender.

Mr. Jerry Taliaferro meticulous usage and well crafted black and white photography, is very detailed and comprehensive.

I believe that WOMEN OF A NEW TRIBE is an excellent homage to many women who have stood before us! Congratulations on your project!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Mr. Jerry Taliaferro was born in the small southern town of Brownsville, Tennessee. After graduating high school in May 1972, he joined the Army. Almost a year later he entered the United States Military Academy at West Point and graduated four years later as a member of the Class of 1977. His real interest in photography began when he was posted to Fort Bragg, North Carolina for the Special Forces Officers Course in 1981. While serving in Germany, his interest photography continued to grow and in 1985 he was published for the first time when a Munich magazine purchased the rights to one of his images. After returning to the United States in the Summer of 1985, Mr. Taliaferro began doing assignments for advertising and design firms. In July 1988, he left the military and began his pursuit of a career in commercial photography. Over the ensuing years, his interest turned more to fine art photography. This change in direction has resulted in several projects and published pieces. His one-man exhibition Women Of A New Tribe premiered at the Afro-American Cultural Center in Charlotte NC on 14 June 2002 and is now a traveling exhibit. For additional information visit

DC Poets Against the War Anthology Review

Posted on Monday, June 18, 2007 at 01:05 in Book Reviews
DC Poets Against the War is one of my favorite anti-war groups in Washington, DC. I have had the opportunity to meet some of its members, invite them to several events and perform at some of their functions. I believe that they did an outstanding job publishing an anthology which was released June 2003 and inviting many authors to participate in such a much needed project. Furthermore, their anthology is excellent and the messages displayed within the contexts of the anthology are depicted very well. It consists of poems by such authors as Naomi Ayala, Luis Alberto Ambroggio, Rei Berroa, David Brescia-Weiler, Richard Blanco, Sarah Browning, Kenneth Carroll, Grace Cavalieri, Jahayra Corrales, Charlie Cray, Katy Didden, Scott J. Ecksel, Zein El-Amine, Michele Elliott, Wade Fletcher, Yael Flusberg, Martin Galvin, David Gewanter, Jomo K. Graham ,Patricia Gray, Leah Harris, Roberto (Bert) Ifill, Esther Iverem, Peter Klappert, Ann B. Knox, Dan Logan, Carmen Lupton, Mike Maggio, Chelsie Miller, E. Ethelbert Miller, Samuel Miranda, Michael Willett Newheart, Gregory Orfalea, Patric Pepper, Kim Roberts, Danny Rose, Joseph Ross, Kaia Sand, Elizabeth Sullam, Dan Vera, and Rebecca Villarreal.

My favorite poem was Greetings from the War, written by Samuel Miranda. His poem was filled with power, truth, and brillance. It’s message still exists today!

“Greetings from the War”

I will greet you with flowers
no matter how many
bullets you bring.
I will greet you with bullets
because the flowers you greet me with
are from my garden.
I will greet you with song
though you curse me
and raise arms against me.
I will greet you with curses
because the wounded child at your feet
is my only son.
I will greet you with embraces
though the knife you carry
cuts away at my arms.
I will greet you with knives
they are made from the shrapnel
I pulled from my leg.

DC Poets Against the War is an informal group of Washington area writers and activists who came together during the winter of 2003 to protest the planned U.S. invasion of Iraq.

Summer Flames Review

Posted on Saturday, June 16, 2007 at 11:14 in Book Reviews
Title: Summer Flames
Author: Vella Munn
Publisher: Calderwood Books
ISBN: # 978-1-934614-02-0
Genre:Contemporary Romance
Themes: Fire-fighters, forest fighters, teachers

Summer Flames Review

Summer Flames is an excellent contemporary romance novella written by Vella Munn. What immediately drew me to reading Summer Flames was the title of the book and having viewed the cover of Summer Flames even added an extra spice for me reading Summer Flames. The characters depicted in Summer Flames were captured very well. The story and plot were very descriptive throughout the entire story. It consists of 222 pages and it was edited by Joy Calderwood. The cover design was created by Jennifer Macaire.

I wished the story was a little bit longer, but other than that, it was an easy read. When I think of Summer Flames, I often think of two individuals in love through heat and passion, and subsequently  their romance ends in the moment of fire.  I think that Vella did an excellent job capturing this essence which is totally fictional in her book, Summer Flames. However, sometimes, in real life, Summer Flames do exist in some relationships, by either parties caught by fire of passion or flames of heart breaking moments.

Summer Flames is indeed an e-book that you want to have in your collection. It will be available during the fall of 2007. Thank you for sharing such an outstanding craft with me and I wish you much success!

Still Living on my feet Review
Still Living on my Feet is Tichaona Chinyelu’s second book of poetry. In this book, Tichaona touches on a variety of subjects such as revolutionary love, humor, relationships and sisterhood. The messages depicted within the contexts of the poems are very vivid and thought provoking. Some of my favorite poems include The Light of Libation, Beauty, Sister Speak, and Sister Speak II.

The cover design which was created by David Lockett of David Lockett Designs, Inc., speaks for itself. It is a strong portrayal of African-American culture, tradition, roots and ancestry.

What particularly drawn me to this book, was the title, it is very abstract, but yet powerful. Sometimes in life, when we feel the battles have been us down, we have to stand and live on our feet, or we can allow them to beat us down. It is clearly evident that Tichaona has experienced life’s trials and tribulations and remains standing strong in the midst of life’s obstacles.

In The WhirlWind Review
In The WhirlWind is a thought provoking powerful book of poetry written by Tichaona Chinyelu. The chose of colors depicted on the front cover of the book were red (blood), black (skin) and green (land), is a representation of African-American history and its roots. The poems within the context of In The WhirlWind touches on a variety of subjects which include women, African-American history, slavery, politics, music and cultures. When reading, In the WhirlWind, I was particularly drawn to the following poems, Weaver Woman, Black History Speaks and Black List. Some of the other poems that caught my attention were Blood Will Tell and Louder than Oppression. With all of these poems, the messages and imagery are very strong and vivid.
