Halloween for HungerWednesday, September 19, 2007

If your kids trick-or-treat, you might want to try Halloween for Hunger this year.

Instead of trick-or-treating for candy, they collect donations of canned food items, which you can then take to your local food bank or homeless shelter.

This is a great way to teach your children that they can do something about it!

Slave-Free ChocolateWednesday, September 12, 2007
Most people probably don't know that every time they take a bite out of a candy bar, they are eating food produced by child slaves.

Even Willy Wonka's chocolate - owned by Nestle - is made of cocoa produced by children, ages 9 - 12 who are kidnapped or lured by slave traders, and forced to toil for no wages.

Most of these children will never see their families again. They receive no schooling, and often sleep locked in sheds at night. They are beaten, and many die as a result of their mistreatment.

Please do not eat chocolate produced by these poor children.

Slave-free chocolate options include:

Tony's Chocolonely and Newman's Own

Do the right thing. Don't support slavemasters.

Scouting TroopsTuesday, September 11, 2007
I love the scouts! I was a girl scout, and my mother, many years ago, helped run a Brownies troop, and Campire Girls before that.

Scouting teaches children values that are often overlooked in modern society - values which are really very, very important. These strong values, combined with production and giving back to society, give children a real sense of self esteem.

Boy Scouts of America has a lot of information on their website. But scouts don't exist only in America - for instance, the Scouts of India have done a lot of good for their own country.

Famous scouts include:
L. Ron Hubbard, founder of Scientology
J.K. Rowling, of Harry Potter
Emma Thompson, actress
Queen Elizabeth II
David Beckham, soccer great
Tony Blair
Laura Bush
Hillary Rodham Clinton
Katie Couric
Dakota Fanning
Barbara Walters
Martha Stewart, millionaire homemaker
Buzz Aldrin
Walter Cronkite
Harrison Ford
Henry Fonda
Bill Gates
John Glenn
Michael Jordan
John Ritter
Ronald Reagan
Nancy Reagan
Jim Morrison

If you have a scout troop, you can make a free scouting website - it's easy.
