Art of War

When a film is not screened for critics, it's usually a pretty bad sign. Thus I wasn't expecting a great make out from the new Wesley Snipes action opus Art of War. Wesley Snipes plays a man who does hole-and-corner work for the United Nations and finds his life off upside down when he is accused of assassinating a Chinese politician. Fortunately, he manages to escape custody. While on the run, he tries to piece together what has actually happened (Fugitive anyone?) Director Christian Duguay has a lot of potential. Many of his scenes have a graceful flow that bring to mind the work of John McTiernan (Pall Hard). On the other handwriting, some of the action sequences are way over the big top, while the plot tries to be grounded in realism. Duguay also seems very interested in technology. This film has more spying gizmos than Tony Scott's Enemy of the State. Art of War likewise tends to be too complex for it's own good. It starts off moderately intriguing, only soon becomes bogged down by far too many characters and unnecessary plotlines. The identity of the film's real villain besides becomes painfully obvious. To top it off, the film's climax offers a fist fight that is just plain ludicrous. Stuck in the middle of all this is the underrated Snipes. He adds a humanity to this film that gives it a much needed boost. Although shades of The Fugitive are apparent in Artistry of War, it really owes more to Mission: Impossible with it's high tech devices and it's spy thriller flavor. Alas, it's not as strong as those films, but it does offer a good Snipes vehicle and a director to mayhap look for in the future.

Manufacturer Jerry Bruckheimer is back with another loud, preposterous action extravaganza--only this time he's made a film that's a little more audience-friendly than past efforts including, Con Air and The Rock. Tell me if this scenario sounds familiar. A gigantic asteroid is barreling towards Earth at break neck speed. Prison term is ticking and the government has to figure out a way to stop it. In this outing, Bruce Willis heads a team of mischievous oil drillers, who must land on the asteroid and blow it up. If the story sounds like Deep Impact, it's probably because it has virtually the same plot. However, Bruckheimer, and director Michael Bay (Bad Boys and The John Rock) have opted to make a lighthearted, in-your-face action picture, that doesnÕt evoke the spirit of doom that the title suggests. All Armageddon aspires to be is a thrill sit. The film is thrilling, even exhausting at times. What Armageddon is lacking, is the element of surprise. This stuff is predictable from beginning to end. Bruckheimer and Alcove have assembled a nifty cat including: Willis, Billy Bob Thornton, Liv Tyler, Steve Buscemi, (world Health Organization has most of the film's best lines), and a great break-out performance by Ben Affleck who, along with Willis, put too much heart into a film that isn't worthy of it. Armageddon is a better film than the dull, soap opera-like Deep Impact, but I'm still in hunting of that perfect summer picture.
