Maggie's Musings

Saturday, December 30, 2006 - DAY 20

Down 3 more pounds. I'm not sure why the Lord is doing this to my body, but I'm not complaining. I have been praying and praying and giving my body to Him every single day. I'm not hungry much, although I still have cravings. I've been eating lots of veggies, for the fun of it, and because they are more interesting than meat. I am eating lots of fat, because it tastes good and keeps me full. But I have been keeping my calories at 1500 to 1600 and that is the main thing I think.

Meat started tasting icky to me this week, so I haven't had any since last Sunday. When I was pregnant and nursing (both times) and for most of 2002, I couldn't eat meat. It happens sometimes, and I just listen to my body. I won't say I'm vegetarian because I still eat gelatin (which is usually made from boiled hooves and animal bones) and I'm sure some of the things in my cupboards have animal products listed in the fine print. Still, my body is very happy and I have that lean, strong feeling most of the time now. I like it so much better than the over-stuffed, sluggish feeling I had been living with for so long. I'd like to work exercise into my schedule, but that is still a few days (weeks) away. Too much to do around here, and not enough time to focus on making it a priority.

Maybe I'll be pescatarian, that's a vegetarian who also eats some fish. When I was young there were lots of vegetarians in my life and most of them still ate fish every now and then. Nowdays that is taboo, to be a vegetarian and still eat fish, but back then, it was fairly common. In my life I've spent a little over 4 years as a vegetarian, and I always feel a relief when my body craves it again. Don't mean to alienate all of my meat-eating readers, but all any of us can do is listen to our bodies, and if I can continue my weight loss, then I'm willing to do pretty much whatever the Lord calls me to.

The addition is looking really good. I'm keeping it clean and we all sit there in the mornings and look out at the mountains. We can see the sun set at night and it's like an oil painting. Just gorgeous. The challenging part is cleaning up the old rooms, and getting them looking as good as the new one. There is lots of painting to be done and cleaning up of grime and grit. It's a lot of work, but the results are satisfying.

Fred has been sick the past week with a terrible cold. The doctors gave him anti-biotics and a full week of his vacation has been sucked up by the cold. A little disappointing because we had several projects we wanted to do, and we've had to put them off for a while.

Fred had to take his company physical the day after christmas and his blood sugar was up to 411. That's about 4-times what it should be. They took him out of service, meaning he can't work, until he gets it down. He's been working so hard at getting it down, eating an Atkins type diet with only 20 to 30 carbs a day, and it has dropped some, but not much. Yesterday it was about 250 and today it's been 300. With his extra efforts to control it, it should have come down more, but it's not. We're worried he'll have to start on insulin shots. All the while my weight's going down and that makes him feel worse. Plus he's gorging on meat, and I"m not eating any, so there is some conflict there. Not between he and I, just between our chosen diets. I"m praying for him. I think he'd feel better, and his sugar would be under better control if we could exercise together. But he's not interested in that for now, so I'm biding my time. When I do start walking, I'll invite him with me. That's all I know to do.

One other good thing happening with me is that my PCOS symptoms are getting better. My monthly cycle was absolutely normal this month, which is a minor miracle in itself. So I'm plugging along, doing what I can, and the Lord is giving me success where I haven't had it before. I know it's Him because I have tried to do this on my in the past and failed every single time. God's grace and mercy are an incredible thing to experience.

Evening Update:  Fred's sugar is down to 189. Phew, some progress at last!

I think labels can be limiting. Listening to your body is the most important thing to remember, and you're excelling at that. Vegetarian? Omnivore? The names don't really matter. It is doing what works for YOU. For me, one moment at a time is also helpful. You're fabulous. Always love the blog. Happy New Year!

Sunday, December 31, 2006 - diabetes

Just came across this recently and saw of the struggle for your hubby with blood sugar. My hubby's was found at over 300 and he was on meds for about a year and then got off...using juicing carrot and apples each morning and then waiting to eat at least 30 to 60 minutes. Then eating oatmeal that has a LOT of additives in it to make it very full of bran, etc. A friend told us how to do this and it has worked pretty well (as well as dietary changes). If you would like the recipe for the oatmeal additive, email me at quilt_lady@charter.net and I hope things go better...both hubby and I are working to loose pounds and gain more control of our sugar...his has been creeping up...and I think it is due to eating too many carbs. Blessings...

Bless his heart! My dh doesn't have diabetes, but his sugar has been up. I'm eating a higher meat diet...was doing vegetarian, but we found out that some of the foods were still triggering my autoimmune reaction so I'm doing meat and veggies only. Missing the rice and milk, but loving feeling better. I agree it is best to listen to what our bodies tell us. I hope your husband feels better soon.

Our pastor's sugar was too high and they put him on probation for 3 months driving the School bus. It made him mad but it also made him start working on getting his sugar in line. He'll tell you now it was exactly what he needed.

Maybe this what the Lord used to help your husband too.

You inspire the socks off of me and I'm so proud of you! I think the key is that each day you are focusing on the Lord and asking Him to help you (plus you are using self-control which is a trait of a mature Christian for sure!) Way to go and press on! Blessings, Kathryn

This is beautiful Maggie, I loved so much much how you said you are "giving my body to Him every single day". I really love that, giving our bodies over to Him so He can create them as He wants them to be!

A Very Blessed New Year : ) Wendy

Hi Maggie.

I have been thinking about all the work you do around the house.

Is that not exercise?

It might even be aerobic (it may not be, I'm not there to see if you are huffing and puffing--I think it would be for me though).

Take care,
Glenda

Hope you had a great Christmas and New Year! I had a quick question. I thought I saw an index for the recipes on the site but now can't find it, just the catagories listed. Am I losing my mind again? (Still?) Thanks for all you do, you can never know how much and how many people you have helped. Every chance I get I tell people about your site. I'm sure they think I have a connection to it somehow, but I just want them to be able to get even half as much out of it as I do.

Exercise, even 10 minutes of walking, will definitely help the blood sugar. So does "food combining" - eating protein and fiber together... seems to work better at stabilizing blood sugar than just one or the other.
Stress and illness will raise blood sugar. So will being on medications, such as Sudafed, even if the med doesn't have any sugar in it! Drinking water also seems to help - staying very well hydrated, especially with that amount of protein consumption.
Also, I had a problem with my blood sugars being a little high.. and I realized I was "cheating". I would take it 2 hours after a meal... but forget that I licked my finger after making the kids a sandwich, or took a sip at their 'tea party'. So make sure your fasting/post meal testing is REALLY fasting!
But really, I can't emphasize the exercising thing enough... I am often on bedrest/limited activity during pregnancy, but even a few minutes, 20-30 minutes after eating, helps tremendously. Maybe you can sneakily ask him to get something for you out of the garage or across the yard to get him moving!

Maggie, I noticed your comment about increasing your fat intake. Fat tastes good because it is sweet. But you are paying a price. Fat is difficult to burn. Your carbohydrates are easier to burn. Try cutting back on the fat but keeping your calories around 1300 to 1500 per day.

I've been reading your web page and using your recipes for a few months now and my family loves your muffins and bread!!! I'm not much of a baker so for me to make muffins is really something!! (and in the morning too...) I just wanted to share that many in my family have issues with blood sugar and they have learned that putting cinnamon in your diet everyday lowers blood sugar. My brother lowered his with diet and this added spice so he didn't have to go on medication. I'm not sure of the amount per day and will check with my sister but what a great way to help your body...painless also unless you don't like cinnamon. Thank you for the recipes and may God the Creator of all bless you and your family.

Thursday, January 18, 2007 - loosing weight

Posted by jesus4gives
I sure would like to know the secret for losing weight. I have tried the diet that they use for heart patients at the Mayo Clinic. But... i would lose i pond and then gain two. So I gave up and I guess that all I need to do is give it to the Lord and pray hard that He gives me the strength to obey in an edible way. You may not know me but pray for me and I will do the same for all of you. Thanks and God bless.

You should try a pedometer. You can get them for pretty cheap at wal-mart. Aim for 10,000 steps a day, and when you're hitting that regularly, aim for 15,000. I like it because it's always a challenge for me, like a game almost. :) You're always on your feet doing something. I find myself more productive this way as well.

To Fred:
The most important thing in diabeties I have found it to greatly increase exercise, walking, house painting etc. work good.
You could try some cinammon, mulberry tea and flax
It helps mine but probably not enough to drop 100+ points.
