Tuesday, April 24, 2007 - I'm Cranky & 12 Healthy Weeks
I'm getting my first ever mammogram next week, and I'm very nervous. Also getting the yearly gyn. exam and am worried that I have edometriosis becasue a very close friend recently had it and it was turning cancerous and she had to have a radical hysterectomy. Eeek! Also feeling very frustrated about PCOS symptoms. Made appt. with eye doctor, for new prescription & contacts, and with Nurse Practitioner to discuss PCOS symptoms. Grr! Argh! I hate the medical stuff but it is the right thing to do and I'm doing it and getting it all out of the way so I'll be prepared to enjoy my summer without any nagging worries over my health.
In a previous post a commenter said a lot of stuff about not succeeding with weight loss being my fault and nothing I can blame on anyone else, certainly not God. Fine. Grrr.
Anyway, I have been tossing around an idea of 12 healthy weeks, and I am looking for up to 2 dozen other ladies who are interested in doing something along those lines. I intend to have a small, private Yahoo Group for support, or maybe a small private message board. I don't know exactly yet. But the premise will be weight loss through calorie counting and eating healthy foods and exercising. All the things we are told to do, but sometimes don't do because it's not exactly easy to make that stuff a priority. The group will be free, and for support, to help us all stay on track. The group will be private for the entire 12 weeks, meaning new members won't be allowed to join. We'll all start at the same time, and all finish at the same time.
The requirments for membership are that you be genuinely dedicated to 12 whole weeks of doing your best. You have to be willing to respect other member's privacy. Losing weight makes some of us very vulnerable and if you can't keep the stuff you read to yourself, or if you are often tempted to gossip, then this isnt' the best place for you. Confidentiality is vital. You have to be nice to other people, and have at least 50 pounds to lose. If you have 100 or more pounds to lose, then you're in good company. The method is counting calories and exercise. Other plans such as weight watchers for examble, are not allowed. I'll only do this if there are other interested parties. If not, I'll just drop the subject.
If you're interested then email me at hillbillyhousewife@msn.com.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask. If you've ever had a mammogram before, then I could use some comfort. That's all for now.--M

Count me in! I just started back...perfect timing.
The mammo won't be bad. My first one was kind of uncomfortable....small hospital, not very experienced technician, bad time of month for me. I just had one about a month ago and it was a breeze...at a major imaging center, the girl doing it was a pro, no pain, not even uncomfortable, really (other than the obvious yuck factor of having your you knows squished) No worries, hon!

Miss Maggie,
I am that previous poster you are so angry at. I am sorry that you did indeed, misunderstand my intentions. When you replied to my post earlier, I failed to pick up the sarcasm in your reply the first time I read it. (It's hard to pick up tone just looking at typed words..) But, now, from this post, I can see that you were only being sarcastic.
I am sorry if my post offended you, truly I am. I hope that as you consider it more, you will realize that.
Still a fan. |

| Mammogram was no big deal, just a smidge embarassing. Was over very fast. Hope that helps! |

Not too bad, just a bit uncomfortable and embarassing when you're shy. I personally do not like anything that requires the up close and personal touching of my body by strangers. Even if they are doctors that I have been going to for years. I'm 57, delivered 3 babies and it still bothers me.
Just something one has to live with. I learned that lesson the hard way. Went about 12 years without going for my yearly pap test and was borderline cancer when I finally went. I had to have a hysterectomy because of my own neglect. The really bad thing is that if I had waited much longer I would have died (before my mid 40's). The reason I wouldn't go for so many years was not only because I am painfully shy but because I had gained so much weight and I was ashamed for them to put me on the scale. Sad but true.
Maybe your weight loss group will help me. I sent you a personal email about my desire to join.

Oh, don't worry about the mammogram! It's more annoying than painful (in my experience), and it's MUCH less embarrassing than being seen in public with dirty hair (ha ha!)
As far as dieting goes, there is a new study out (I LOVE this one) that says dieting does not work - we have a body type, the end.
I'm a 5 foot tall, 200 pound mom and grandma, and I figure the good Lord made a lot of me so my babies don't miss when they run up to hug me.

| I am beginning to agree with the last post. I watched a documentary on PBS about weightloss and I have to say it doesn't paint a rosy picture. Did you know your body actually works against you losing weight. it will secrete a hormone to make you want to eat! I don't want to put a dent in your dieting hopes, but right now the best I can do is walking. I can't afford the "special foods" to help dieting. I am walking about 2 miles a day and that is about it for now. I am 40 years old with a genetic predisposition to weight gain as well as hypothyroidism. I have spent 3/4ths of my life trying to lose weight. Enough already. It is fast becoming an idol in my life. The only thing that keeps me coming back to weight loss is a fear that my weight will get up even higher. For now, I am in my rebellion stage. By the way this is Diane from Lula, Ga |

Oh I so would like to join in. I'm 5'3, just under 230, just under age 40, with PCOS and I had thyroid cancer two years ago now. The only time in my life I have lost weight on purpose was 10 years ago when I was not working, counting calories 100% of the time, and exercising for several hours each day! Of course when my summer of indulgence was over the weight creeped right back up.
Now that I am taking Metformin for the PCOS regularly (took 2 years to gain the tolerance to the full dose) and my cancerous thyroid is out, the weight gain has stopped.
It's funny but I was just reading about counting calories in the Tightwad Gazette last night, and wondering if the recent medical changes would allow me to actually keep some weight off if I try the calorie counting and exercise again. I soooo do not want to become diabetic, and I know I have to start moving my body around NOW!
I have never had the benefit of a support group before. I would really like to give this a try!

| Hi, I had my baseline at 35, It wasnt bad, I am very small(AAA) and they had me all the way in the machine, the tech was so nice and took the cue from me to kid around. She said I was the smallest breasts she had ever done! A good tech will put you at ease. Oh, if they didnt tell you, no detorant, lotion, baby power, etc, dont put anything on your chest. Wear comfy clothes! Good luck! |

Hey, not to worry at all about the mammo! I work in a hospital and we do them all the time here. They should never hurt..if they do, then the tech is doing it wrong! I had my first one at 29, it pinched but I told her, and she stopped and started all over again. I just hate to have to be topless in front of a complete stranger..I personally would rather give birth than go thru the pap experience!
Love reading your site! I learn quite a bit from it!
God Bless you! |

| I just had my first one 2 weeks ago. I have to say, I'd rather do that than have an annual gynocologist visit once a year. MUCH easier to have a mammogram! |

Hi Miss Maggie,
I have PCOS like you. I just wanted to let you know that if you have the time to go to Richmond, VA (I think you are in S. VA) then I would recommend my doctor - Dr. John Nestler at VCU. It takes several months to get an appointment, but he is a PCOS specialist and I have been very happy with him treating me :)
Best,
Jennifer |
