Monday, May 7, 2007 - Crisis of Faith Averted
Over the weekend I had a minor crisis of faith. Not my faith in God, but my faith in the diet. The peanut butter Monster visited me in earnest and I gorged on about 300 to 400 calories worth. On the bright side, I'm gettng so used to my lower calorie intake that after my binge I wasn't hungry again until time for a midnight snack. I couldn't have eaten supper if I'd tried because I was just too full. This is partly due I believe to the power of protein and fat. They are a powerful appetite deterrant. The day I binged I still made it in under 1200 calories, so that was a sweet blessing.
I tend to mess up on my diets a lot. The first 3 days I do fine, but the 4th day is always hard on me, Most the time I have trouble sticking to my guns through the 4th day. When I do manage to make it through I'm usually good to go for a while. But that "Hump" day is a mental land mine. Everywhere I try to rest my brain, I come up with reasons to dash it all and be fat for the rest of forever. I prayed a lot this time, and when the 5th day rolled around I had some peace of mind about it. I will make mistakes on my diet. I will have boo-boo's and cheats and all the rest. In spite of it all though, I will keep getting back on the horse. It can throw me, but it can't break my spirit. As long as I keep trying my efforts will add up.
My diet is easier now than it was last week. The terrible hunger has passed. I have long periods of time where I don't even think about food. I'm able to manage my meals with less effort and I feel much less deprived than I did on the 4th day. When I feel sorry for myself I put myself in a mindset that is ripe for mistakes to breed. Self-pity, it's murder on my good intentions. I plan to watch out for it now. To recognize it when I see it and replace it with empowering thoughts instead of poor-me thoughts.
Sticking to my diet does make me feel like I have more control over my life. With PCOS it's easy to feel like the "victim" of a disease. It's easy to feel like there's nothing I can do and just give up. My momma raised a fighter though, and I'm not giving up so easily. Today I feel pretty good about doing this for the rest of my life. I think it will help me achieve a level of health that has illuded me, and that is worth giving up my old routine of eating what I want when I want it. The benefits outweigh the discomfort.

That's all for now. I am finding the diet much easier to stick to now, and I hope it just gets easier with time. If anyone has any links to Healthy sites that offer encouragement or support for very low calorie diets, I'd love to know about them.
P.S. I do exercise, 1-1/2 to 2 miles almost every morning. Exercise doesn't make me lose weight. I have blogged about it extensively in the past and choose not to go over it all again. I am confident that my doctors have given me the right course of action and if anyone feels that it's not the right course of action for them, then by all means choose a different one. I don't think mine is right for anyone else but me, and I shall not be dissuaded from this belief. Blessings--MM

I am glad to see that you are doing better with your diet journey, and that you aren't letting a cheat (which as you note is natural) derail you. At least you cheated with peanut butter, something that filled you and gave you a bunch of protein. We are all of us human, and slip-ups in a strict eating system will happen. As long as you get back up and get back on program, that is the goal.

Hello Miss Maggie. This is Roxie again. I wanted to say that you are human and have human failings like all of us. I am proud of you for getting back into the swing of things and starting again. That is difficult for a lot of people to do. Most quit and give up...Peanut butter is a 'good thing' to cheat with if you are going to cheat. It will quite the sweet tooth but it is also full of protein...So it is good for you.
My down fall is soda, I am an addict....I admit it here in writing. Diet soda is not for me as there is something in it that gives me the monster of all headaches. So if I have a soda it is the 'real thing' as they say.
When you have that 4th day and you know it is going to be hard, try and keep busy doing something different than what you usually do....Maybe take yourself out of the house. Go on a picnic with the kids and take just your diet food...just do something different than normal.
You know if you posted it, I missed it, but how did your room addition ever come out? Are now cooking those wonderful meals in a nice new kitchen?

Have you looked into Kimkims? It is basically the OLD versions of low carb. It is low everything - carbs, fat and calories.
I went on a low calorie diet and lost nothing at 1000 a day. I was depressed but Kimkins seems to be working. It is hard, it is restrictive but it is FAST.

I would never advocate for someone going against doctor orders but I read in your blog that your doc is suggesting 800-1000 calories per day?

<br>I would highly recommend you read a book I found regarding insulin resistance eating: The Insulin-Resistance Diet : How to Turn Off Your Body's Fat-Making Machine by Cheryle R. Hart M.D. and Mary Kay Grossman R.D.

<br>With chronically high insulin levels it is very difficult to eat and loose weight until you modify how and what you eat. Of course portion control and calories is a part of it too .... but what you eat is so much more important when it comes to insulin resistance, especially in women with PCOS.

| I have been doing this no sugar, no white stuff, and eating mostly whole foods for about 3 weeks. I eat fresh or cooked veggies, beans, lean meats, ( 4oz beef, poultry, fish ) prepared with fresh herbs, fruit, only red potatoes and whole grains and low fat dairy. I eat oatmeal (not the quick kind) for breakfast a snack later maybe vanilla yogurt with fruit added, lunch is usually leftovers from dinner, another fruit or whole wheat toast with all fruit spread for snack later and dinner is lean meat, veggies, (cooked or raw) maybe basmatti brown rice or roasted red potatoes (using olive oil) or whole wheat pasta with no sugar added sauce with my fresh herbs and salad loaded with all kinds of veggies and my own salad dressing, maybe skim milk and fruit for a snack. Sometimes it's just beans, cabbage, squash with onions, and tomatoes or whatever vegatable is on sale. I use olive but not butter or margarine and try to use salt sparingly, opting for herbs when I can. I make my own marinades for meat. I can truly sayI never get hungry. If I'm at the grocery store and smell cookies baking it sets off a craving but not hunger. LOL I don't measure or count calories but I don't eat huge portions either.I have lost about 10 lbs already which is pretty good for my 49 year old metabolism. I plan to start walking Monday since I am feeling much more energetic.This is working for me, maybe it will work for others. |

Gosh, I feel for you, Maggie. Thinking of this change in your diet for life would be overwhelming, so definitely, take it only one day at a time. Remember, tomorrow is promised to no one (not to be a downer), so no need to fret over something that is long-range.
Although my weight has currently settled at 212, with the addition of a daily walk, my body easily drops down to 180. It seems my body jumps at the chance to lose THOSE pounds. But 180 seems to be my set point. If I want to get down to 145--which I did back in the early '90s and kept it off for a few years--then I have to cut back to about 1500 calories with even more exercise. This doesn't seem possible now with three kids, a husband and home, plus I'm still nursing the eighteen-month-old.
I'm not sure what I'll do. I was taught at our church that an overweight/obese born-again Christian is ruining their testimony of overcoming sin when the unsaved judge their size as gluttony-related. What do you think? |

Hi Maggie, I am a stay-at home Mom of one year and have really enjoyed your website. I don't know much about PCOS, but am recently starting my own war on the battle of the bulge. I eat alot of raw vegetabels, but have also found that if my snack or meal does not have protein, I will soon be hungry. Eating more protein has helped alot! Things like low-fat dairy, nuts, or an hard-boiled egg. Almonds are so great for you and it doesn't take many to keep hunger pangs away especially if you drink a glass of water too. I have always been a walker, but as you say it doesn't help loose weight. Lately I have been trying lifting weights. It actually helps the fat come off. The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn during the day. It has been helping me, but as you said, you must find what works for you.
Anyway, blessings to you and your family and to your weight-loss/ get healthy efforts. |

You came in at under 1200 AFTER a binge? You are doing great! Congratulations!
(As other posters have pointed out, there are far worse things to binge on than peanut butter.)
I agree about protein- a teeny bit of protein at every meal really helps. I hard cooked a bunch of eggs, fed the yolks to my pets, and kept the hard cooked egg whites (chopped up) in a little bowl in the fridge. I would eat about three egg white chunks, each about the size of a die (sp? a single dice, at any rate) with every meal, snack, cheat, everything, and really helped stave off hunger. My nutrition prof told me that these were about 5 calories each.

<br>I wanted to let you know that the fourth day of quitting smoking is the worst, too. There is something about Day 4 that is just very hard for quitting something or changing a habit. I made it through with a similar plan to whack out the self pity.

<br>Even though I don't have a ton of weight to lose, I too have found that I lose absolutely no weight through exercise. However, the time spent on it keeps me away from food and the endorphins definitely keep me happier.

I think it would have been appropriate for you to read the last few of Maggie's entries more carefully, and if you click on the CONTACT link on Maggie's homepage, you will see that she addresses the issue of hydrogenated fats.
What Maggie DOES make clear in her entries is that what is right for her doesn't have to be and probably isn't right for others. |

I am eating a very satisfying, healthy 1200 or so calories per day and am losing 1 to 2 pounds per week when I lose. Along with this, I strength train in my home for free on M, W, and F and aim to go for a walk 5-6 days per week. The strenth training only takes 20 mins. once you get used to it and don't have to check the instructions 500 times while going through it.

I've lost 50 pounds in the last year--the first time I've ever been successful. I thin the reason it worked this time is that I've been lenient enough about the diet that I never was desparate to quit or to binge on bad foods. I accepted from the beginning that I would not be able to maintain a perfect record of diet compliance, and let myself have the foods I "needed" (e.g., peanut butter) often enough that I never really felt the need to binge on them. Remember, "perfect is the enemy of good!" and that's especially true when you're trying to eat right. I used to diet strictly for several days, then give up when I goofed, telling myself I was a failure. Now when I goof, I just get back on the horse.
I loved the looks of your roast beef sandwhich with boullion for dipping--eating delicious foods that you love is SO important on a diet. Woman does not live my celery and lettuce alone, not for very long! |
