Maggie's Musings

Wednesday, June 13, 2007 - Open Source Radio Interview

Howdy All,

I did a radio interview tonight at 7pm with Christopher Lydon on the Food Stamp Challenge for Public Radio. I think there's a way to listen to it online if you didn't catch it but I'm not sure exactly how that works. Our speakers are busted for the moment and until I get new ones I won't be able to hear it myself.

My mom listened on the computer and she said it went well. "That's my Maggie." was her response. It's nice to have someone in your corner cheering you on.

Fred couldn't stay in the house, he had to go off for a long motorcycle ride. Some things are just too intense. I don't go to work with him, he doesn't go to work with me. We talk to eachother about these things, but beyond emotional support, we keep these things separate. Whatever works as they say.

I'd never done a radio interview before and it was fun. Earlier today I contacted a new friend who has done interviews in the past and she was very helpful telling me what to expect and how to manage myself. It gave me a boost of confidence that really helped me focus on what I was doing instead of on my belly and the butterflies fighting a war therein.

I wanted to thank everyone who listened and all the readers who are so kind to me and give me so much encouragement. It makes all the difference. Now I'm exhausted and really need a nap. Phew!

PS I am listening to your interview, and want to tell you that I agree with your view that children will learn to cook to empower themselves. I have, for a long time, cooked everything (or most :) ) from scratch. My eldest daughter would complain of the food we ate on the days it was cereal because of my time restraints. I told her that if she wanted to wake up and make something else, she was welcome to. She does. She is 11 years old. My 9.5 year old daughter is almost ready.

I enjoyed listening to your interview on public radio and I agree with you that children need to be taught to cook. Thank you for your wonderful web site. We've been frugal for a long time and I thought I knew a lot, but in reading your web site I've learned many new things. Thank you and keep up the good work.

Maggie,
I've been a fan of your website for quite some time now, and it was a pleasure to put a voice with a blog when I listened to your radio interview. You did a great job! I have made many of your recipes, and they have all been great, but my favorite is the lentil chili. I make it with tomatoes from the garden, and it gives me such pleasure to be able to feed my family so well on so little. Thanks for all you do.

For those who don't know how to listen to the interview, just do a search on iTunes (its free to download) for Christopher Lydon and then click on the Open Source link and you can listen to it. That's how I'm doing it. The link on the website didn't work.

Hi Maggie--
I wasn't familiar with your blog until I heard your interview on Radio Open Source (on KAZU, Pacific Grove, CA, radio). Sounds like we had a similar upbringing--struggling parents and lots of government cheese and peanut butter. My siblings and I all learned to cook from real necessity. It sure would have been nice to have a resource like your blog when we were trying to figure it out. Thanks so much for your grounded, practical voice--on the radio and on the Web. Keep up the good work!

Hee! I hear you're building a chicken coop too. I envy your privelege to keep chickens. Our zoning laws are way too strict for that. Chickens would affect the neighbors property values too much. Ryan is such a dream baby. A Big, BIG dream baby. :-) What is the link to your blog? I'll put it here on mine and send you some visitors. Hugs & Love, M

I really enjoyed listening to you speak! It's good to put a voice with your site. I found myself nodding along a ton, and even feeling a little guilty for using the "we have nothing for dinner" whine when I actually have plenty of stuff, it just doesn't sound good at the time. Pasta, tuna, canned fruits and veggies, we get cheese, milk, cereal, beans and eggs on WIC. And if we use your $70 plan, we can actually splurge with the food stamps we get as a family of 5. By the way, I checked out the Dollar General because of your site, and I had no idea they sold food that I could get on my food stamps! Thanks, Maggie.

Maggie,
I just listened to the entire program and was amazed that you held up so well. This is the first time I've even heard your voice. Well mannered and all. Congrats and all that.
In case you don't remember me, I'm the father that raised his boy on your menus. I cooked for him ever since your Hill Billy Housewife came on, and I'm so happy for doing it. He's in college now, so my cooking needs are less, but I have ALL your recipes.
May god bless you and your family.

Hi Maggie,

I love that your little brother is kilted : )

The radio show was a treat, it was so nice to have a sweet voice behind your words. I do think youre right about it being a stunt, and yet if it ends up in bettering things its a good thing.

My problem comes in that its taken out of context, as you were mentioning too. Quite honestly, food help is often the least of a poor person's problems i think, at least where i live. Not that food isnt a huge thing, it is, but that honestly the even bigger problems are the emotional and physical health effect affects of ~~~long term chronic~~~stress of constant money worry and insecurity, and problems with the even deeper basic needs like affordable housing. Since food help is the cheapest of these things to remedy its what public policiy focuses on and the other stuff gets ignored. Not that food help should be ignored, but neither should the other things.

I shouldnt complain too much though, Oregon has the best food stamp program in the country. Its not uncommon to recieve even 150 a month for a single person who is really in need, which sounds like much more than other states.

Paix,

Wendy

As I was listening to the radio program I was thinking along the same lines as Wendy---food supply is only one of the worries of the poor.

Those who are doing the challenge (for a mere week)aren't also putting on the financial struggle of shelter and clothing PLUS: hygiene, health care, family planning, etc., etc., etc.

I agree with the other posters, it was nice to hear your voice. Are you like me and hate to hear your voice recorded? But you sounded so sweet.

I appreciate what you had to say, and also your cheap menus. Before I had kids, there was a lady I worked with who would tell a story about only having $10 one day with no food in the house, and choosing to feed just her kids that night instead of herself, because of course, she could not feed herself plus two children on just $10. The story made me sad, but I do remember thinking...would it really be that hard to feed your family one meal on $10? Since then, I have done that so many times, but never starting from nothing. So I appreciate that your menus start with nothing on the shelves. That is different from so many sites on the Internet, but it makes your menus so much more useful.

Hi Miss Maggie,
I just wanted to let you know that I heard the interview with Christopher Lydon and I thought it was incredible! I had never heard of your site before but I immediately checked it out. I also told just about every person I know about it. I am a social worker who works with low income families and this information is just so valuble; not just for those of us on a budget but for all of us who are trying to live a bit more simply. Thanks for what you do!

Maggie,
I heard your interview from the link you provided, and you were great! Thanks for sharing~and for all you do to try and help others make better choices, despite money and prior knowledge. I totally understand how the congresspeople will never fully appreciate the situation because it is not ruling their childrens bellies. At least it is attracting attention, though. ;-)

Wednesday, June 27, 2007 - Would you consider me a regular bather?

Posted by Anonymous
I bathe/shower every other day, regularly. I have never had any complaints nor have my children. On that note, however, if we have had "fun in the dirt" then we bath that night regardless of when the last bath was. Also, on a personal note for us females, I do believe when its that time of month, we need to bathe everyday.
I do put on fresh clothes, deoderant, & undergarments everyday though. Along with, of course, all other regular maintance routines for personal care. My husband is an veryday bather... his job calls for it.

I've been reading your blog and going over your website for about 18 months now. I've learned a lot, and gained a lot of confidence from it. While, my family and I are closer to $70 a week budget, I really appreciate your $40 a week food budget. It's inspiring to me---that and Amy Dacycyn's Tightwad Gazette.

Also, I have to agree with the other posters: your voice is delightful on the interview. At first, you do sound nervous, but you more than hold your own with the interviewer and with Marion Nestle, a long time food expert who is a pro at these interviews. You have such a beautiful, feminine voice. I am so glad to have heard it after all these months of reading your website. As for the Food Stamp Challenge, I don't think the congressmen can cook or are even very creative in the kitchen. True, $21 isn't very much, but it is frustrating to see that they, too, are relying more on convenience foods that traditional home cooking.

Home Ec. used to be required, but it's not any more. I think it should go back to being a required course. It teaches so many basic necessities of life that many feel they don't have the time or inclination to pass on to their children.

Thank you again for your Ministry to us all!

Monday, July 16, 2007 - Food stamp crunch

Posted by Anonymous
This is a great site! It's so funny that the first thing that pops up is about food stam(a displace sahm) only live off of my ex's child support. I'm in school finishing my degree. My bf does contribute some, but he doesn't make a lot of money and he pays child support out too. So according to DCF it's just me and my 2 kids. We get $310, but starting next month we are being cut to $110 since our rent went down with the move. This is how it works out. At 310 a month that is $103.33 a person per month. Which in a 31 day month is $3.33 a person per day for all meals. We were making it work fairly good on that since we get WIC to cover milk and basic things like peanut butter and juice and cheese. With only $110 a month here are the numbers...$36.66 a person for the month which is $1.18 per day per person. That isn't a whole lot. Well maybe a whole lot of Roman noodles....lol. But I would rather give my two toddlers something better than that.
