Maggie's Musings

Sunday, July 1, 2007 - Server Temporarily Down

The site is down. I am fussing at the hosting company. I haven't heard back from them yet. There is a standard message on their help screen that such and such server is down. That would be the place that houses my server. I will hear back from them or it will be repaired soon, or I'll have to find a different place to host it. HBHW isn't going anywhere there are simply some technical issues that are being worked out.

My welfare is fine, and I appreciate everyone's concern.

I was wondering where Hillbilly Housewife went! I was making iced tea and decided to look up the 'right' way to make it -- and you were gone! I did find another site that looked like yours, but wasn't sure if it was a mirror site or what. It didn't have the budget menus, but did have all the graphics and recipes that HH did.

Miss Maggie, when I use my bookmark for hillbillyhousewife.com a hosting site page comes up and stating that "A HostOnce.com costumer has registered this domain name." Did someone steal your name? Just wondering as yesterday the message you posted about was displayed. Glad you are fine.

Now, you know we only know each other on the internet, and yet...You help my heart settle! When I am confused by messages from "the world" suddenly I know who I am again.

Thank you for sharing your story about the radio interview. We still live on peanut butter and food box beans...another reader had said Oregon has a good food stamp program...unfortunately our family of 4 hasn't found that to be true.

But with Miss Maggie's menus...and borrowing a bit of your ingenuity....there is always a meal in the cupboard. And as my friend Peg says...anything is a square meal with a glass of milk ;)

Blessings, Miss Maggie, to you and yours. Thanks for being you!

Monday, July 30, 2007 - Regarding Dry Powdered Milk Taste

Posted by Anonymous
I lived deep in the northern bush for 10 years with no electricity. Being a milkaholic, I had to find a way to be able to work with dried milk powder.

THIS IS THE TRICK TO MIXING GREAT TASTING MILK FROM POWDER:

~ When mixing your milk powder, add 3 tablespoons of non fat, dried coffee creamer powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of white sugar to each gallon you are making of your dried milk.

~ Be sure you are mixing your milk, that you mix it well, and there are no lumps at all. It is important that the mixture is smooth and completely lump free.

~ I mix the powders with only around 1/3 of the water needed (always use cold water) to be sure it is completely dissolved, then I add the rest of the water and mix thoroughly.

~ Once you have chilled it, it will taste soooooo much better! TOO EASY, RIGHT? Tastes almost the same as 2% milk!

Here's to saving money with the huge price hikes to fresh milk. Don't need it to be fresh that badly. Dried milk with dried creamer and a pinch of sugar tastes wonderful, and works just great!

*One more thing to note...
>>>Be sure you wash your container out with soap and diluted bleach, then rinse WELL, each time you make a new batch.<<<
The bleach disinfects the container so there is no possibility of mixing any of your old residue into your new batch of milk.
Soap alone leaves a microscopic residue of milk on the inside of containers; just enough to spoil your next batch of milk within 24 hours. Using soap with diluted bleach and rinsing well will keep your milk fresh for much longer,

Wednesday, August 1, 2007 - Food stamps/ monthly budget

Posted by Anonymous
This is old but I was reading some of the comments after your radio interview. one writer said, 'We get $310, but starting next month we are being cut to $110 since our rent went down with the move. This is how it works out. At 310 a month that is $103.33 a person per month. Which in a 31 day month is $3.33 a person per day for all meals. We were making it work fairly good on that since we get WIC to cover milk and basic things like peanut butter and juice and cheese. With only $110 a month here are the numbers...$36.66 a person for the month which is $1.18 per day per person. That isn't a whole lot. Well maybe a whole lot of Roman noodles....lol. But I would rather give my two toddlers something better than that. '

I don't know how in the world $310 a month PLUS Wic is not enough?! I too have a family of 3 to feed and that is way more than enough and we are not on any sort of govt. assistance whatsoever. We can eat wonderfully, often organic, even, on $300 or less per month.

Those of us on budgets should not necessarily consider that things like juice are 'necessities'. Not hardly! Water is a necessity. Peanut butter, cheese, beans, rice, fruit, vegetables, these are necessities.

Here is a suggestion we've employed: cut out all extras - no snack foods that are pre-made. If you must have juice buy the frozen variety.

It's amazing what we think are necessities and when you really look closer are honestly luxuries at best.

Btw, if you are feeding your toddler a juice do them a huge favor in preventing obesity and dilute their juice big time. My son (when he gets juice) gets about 1.4 cup with 1 cup water. He doen't know the difference, it just sweetens his water a bit.

Miss Maggie- as a teacher I have noticed a OCD/ADHD -anorexia/ bulimea connection. A friend whose father had turrets was also told by her doctor thet she was at risk. I almost lost some one today. What does GOD offer as comfort and hope to those who see his food as an enemy?

There is a User's Group for the Old Fashioned Education which will help you find your answer keys. Go back to that website, you will find a link on the left. Those ladies will fix you up!

I've been reading these comments and must say I'm a bit bemused. I am among Miss Maggie's fans and friends, and miss her postings, too. But....come on, ya'll....'What is she taking a break from?" How did you end up here? Happenstance? Or did you find her blog by benefitting from one of her many websites. In addition to freely sharing what many, many people on the 'net charge way too much money for, she has a family and a real life.

Let's be polite, ladies.

And of course, thank you to those who are!

Saturday, September 29, 2007 - fudge!!

Posted by Debbie
Finally, I have found the fudge recipe that is my grandmothers recipe. My grandmother lost hers, and doesn't remember it. My daughter and I have gone on line and looked up many recipes for old fashioned fudge. We found three that were close and by trial and error managed to make on recipe from those three. This one is it, even to the way you say not to stir, be patient etc...thanks!!! I'm a fudge fanatic.

Friday, October 5, 2007 - homemade menstrual pads

Posted by Anonymous
I wish I would have heard about that before menopause! anyways... pour hydrogen peroxide (1/2 - 1 cup) in bucket of cool water and soak your used pads or anything else with blood until you are ready to wash... I store a bucket on a shelf above my washer for just that purpose. Hot water will kill the oxygen so use cool water... alot cheaper than oxyclean!

Wednesday, October 17, 2007 - shopping list

Posted by Anonymous
I think you should check the price's again on the 45.00 and 70.00 shopping list's. I shop at Wal-mart, 99 cent store, big lots, get bread free from the day old bread drop off and the mexican markets (produce and meat are very inexpensive) and still can't get it to that price. I pride myself on knowing the price's of items at any said store, so, yes I do comparison shop. I don't buy junk, meaning, soda's, kool-aid, chip's, cookies or candy.Heck, I rarely buy juice! I don't buy name brand unless it's cheapier than the store's or off brand. I do buy vegies and some fruit in the restraunt size cans because they are VERY cheap. I have a large family (8 of us) and can use them up in the week quickly. I buy in bulk only and I mean only if it is cheapier and will be used quickly........so it doesn't go bad, stale, whatever. So please update your price list, cause it's driving me CRAZY! Thanks for listening
P.S. thanks for the site, you have lots of great things here.

Monday, October 29, 2007 - GFCF diet

Posted by Susan in Racine
Hi Maggie! Hope you are well. Our middle one has been on a gluten-free, casein-free diet to treat her autism since mid-August. Haven't seen the remarkable change that some experience; however, she seems to be benefiting from the multiple supplements she is on: magnesium citrate, Vit. C, zinc, probiotics, etc.

It is suspected she has mercury poisoning, as well as having had a horrible over-response to the rubella vac. at 14 months. We are preparing her to do chelation treatments in the future. All expensive, but what wouldn't you sell or give for the chance to have a healed child??

Thought I'd mention these biomedical treatments. Type in autism.com and learn about them. I recall your children had AD symptoms. Please look into diet. With love and prayers for whatever keeps you silent now.... Susan
