VH1 released a preview of the new realty show "The Shot" formerly slated to be called "Click". It is produced by the same folks as Americas Next top Model, so we expect the same manner of show, with beautiful models and lots of drama. We think next season they should get David LaChapelle to host the show, apparently he got one of his big breaks through VH1also, so it would be fitting. Or it would be cool to see our other Brooks Institute of Photography friends like Ariel Lieberman or Warren make the shot next season. What do you think about Preview the Shot on VH1?

Monday, October 8, 2007 - Edward Weston at the Getty Museum

Whether you are a photographer in Los Angeles, or an art affectionado, I recommend going by the GETTY MUSEUM to see the Edward Weston Photography exhibit, which will remain open to the public until November 25, 2007.

My trip to see Edward Weston's art at the Getty museum gave a new glimpse into the development  :) of his unique perspective. As an admirer of Weston's photography since first seeing his photographic art about 10 years ago on display at the Weston Photography Gallery in my hometown of Carmel California, I thought that I was quite familiar with his photography, however the trip to the Getty left me with new insights into his life and art.

The exhibit does an illuminating job of showing a wide variety of Westons work that encompasses his early photographic representations of literary works and his growth as an artist towards the discovery of his own unique perspective. It was particularly interesting to learn about how Edward Weston  had adopted and rejected the early pictoralist style and also that he too began his photographic career by drawing inspiration from other art forms that he enjoyed such as literature.

In addition to Weston's photographs there is also photography by Imogen Cunningham and an artist by the name of Luc Delahaye. And I was particularly inspired by giant photos by Luc Delahaye because it is new for me to see much digital photography in art galleries. Especially interesting that the curator had chosen to juxtapose works of an analog (silver halide and paladium) master with photography of the digital realm. Seeing their works side by side reminded me of the possibilities of combining black and white photography and using computers to digitally create composits. This was something that I had explored as a student at Brooks Institute, (example below) and I feel is a great contemporary way to create an expressive image with unlimited possibilities. Hopefully I can find the time to explore this further.
