A hosted PBX system differs from a conventional PBX system in the type of installation employed. In a hosted system, the PBX system is not installed in the company premises; instead it is controlled by a service provider. Hence it also referred as virtual phone system. The service provider provides the necessary service through VoIP networks. A single service provider provides service to numerous clients. A host of advanced features, which are usually associated with expensive equipments, are made available at a fraction of the cost to individual companies. This low cost is possible since the expenditure of the service and equipments are shared among the clients.

Calls to a Hosted PBX Phone System are answered by the hosted service provider’s equipment. Hosted systems usually greet the caller with a recorded message containing a menu of options. The call is then diverted to the appropriate recipient depending on the extension chosen by the caller.

A major difference between Hosted PBX systems and conventional PBX systems is the fact that in a hosted system an extension is associated with a particular person, and not a telephone. This enables a person to receive calls independent of his current location. This facility called follow-me calling utilizes a list of phone numbers associated with the person. The person can provide the phone number of his current location to the system, which then associates this number with his office extension number. Any business calls to this extension number is automatically routed to the phone number of the employee’s current location.

Companies which have offices and employees in different locations stand to gain a lot from the follow-me facility. The single recipient point provided by the hosted PBX system gives the illusion of a single office location. Companies can thus provide their clients and customers a better service using non variable telephone numbers.

One way to avoid international calls is to call someone Collect. By doing this you pass the payment off to them. Of course, unless you are trying to make your friends mad, this is not the best way to go about making long distance calls. Another way is to make sure your phone plan or cell phone plan covers long distance calls, however, if you are not making long distance calls all the time then you are more than likely going to be spending a lot more money on the plan than what you would be making the long distance calls.

So what is the best way to beat the system? Well I cannot really call it beating the system, but you could always get a calling card. This is a card that you put a set amount of money on, and then use it to make your long distance calls. Now sure you are still paying for the long distance calls, but you are putting a limit to how much money you are going to spend. This way there are no hidden fees at the end of the month on your phone bill. Everyone has to make long distance calls at one point or the other so a calling card could make a good gift. I am not saying that a calling card is perfect for everyone, but it could be a step in the right direction. Who knows you could end up saving a lot of money by using them. Also, you will save a lot of friends by not making them pick up your bill for the long distance calls.

Now when you are thinking about buying these cards the best thing you can do is look for a great place to buy the cards. Now, unless you just hate using the internet, I think that you should get them online. Buying them in a store is fine too, but after you pay for gas to drive around you are spending way to much money on it. A lot of times calling cards can be shipped to your house free of charge.

Let me just say again, calling cards are not going to be right for everyone. They do have their weak points as well. Like if you run out of money on one of them during a phone call they cut the call off. Now if it is just a friend, that is fine, you can tell him about it later. What if it turned out to be a big time business call? Then you would have a hard time talking your way out of that one. So make sure that a calling card is right for you before you go out and buy one. You may be happy you did.

If you have done any research into the confusing world of long distance telephone rates, you have discovered that conventional long distance is expensive compared to almost any of the alternatives. This is especially true when you factor in the extra fees and taxes added on by governments.

Conventional phone companies rely on people being either uninformed or unmotivated to check out the alternatives. Usually they bundle long distance with local services so you are never quite sure how much your long distance service is costing.

For instance, many consumers sign up for a local plan that includes unlimited long distance calling. They usually pay between $50 and $70 for this package. But they could get the same level of service for much less money by staying with a $20-$30/month local package and using a dial around plan that charges only 1.9 cents/minute for calls to the USA and Canada.

Phone Cards - a solution with serious limitations

One alternative to conventional long distance service is to purchase a prepaid phone card. These cards are often purchased online. After signing up you are sent an account number and PIN which allow you to access the long distance system.

Having a phone card lets you place long distance calls by calling a toll free access number, entering your account information, and then dialing the number you want to call.

Some of the features and shortcomings of phone cards are as follows:

  • No monthly minimum charge or account fee.

  • Quality plans do not require a caller to enter an account number or PIN when calling from registered numbers. You can register as many as 10 phone numbers with your account.
  • Connection quality is comparable to conventional long distance.
  • Some plans (higher quality ones) give you free online account management including real time call history. This lets you see the details of every call -- the number called, time and date of the call, duration, and cost.
  • Dial around plans can be used at home, with a cell phone, or while traveling in the USA.

Summary - Dial Around Plans are much more versatile

While it is true that phone cards provide a convenience when traveling, dial around plans offer a better and cheaper long distance alternative for anyone who uses long distance service on a regular basis.

Because of technology a few digits can mean a whole lot of things and before you know it, you have been scammed. They do not inform customers properly of the call rates that that certain prepaid phone card has.

As you may observe, most of the time the advantages of prepaid phone cards also have opposing disadvantages and vice-versa. So does it mean that prepaid phone cards are not convenient? Actually, what it means is that convenience with prepaid phone cards is not absolute. It all depends on who is using it and his / her preference.
