RA Applications

Now... Every year University Life hires these students that are affectionately called RAs (Thier real names are Residence Assistants).  These people allegedly help out other people in their floors or section to get organised, socialise with each other, assist them in locating things around campus, or even just someone to talk to.

As with all jobs they have minimal requirements... GPA, kissing up, reference letter, resume, the usual job stuff.  Anyways, I decided I was going ot try out because of some.... odd circumstances last year prevented me from applying.  First wall I hit.... no prof would give me a reference letter... because apparently, one semester isn't long enough.  Yet, all these 1st year student... who by the way.. went through a 3 week strike are qualified from getting a letter from them.  Confused?  So was I.  Anyways, I eventually got one, and I greatly appreciated that profs recommendation.

So after that's all done, you wait a few days and they email you to let you know if you make the cut for an interview.  I didn't get an interview, which I didn't see as overly odd.  Mind you, no one believed me... and I often had to defend my honour as people thought I was trying to throw them off.  So, its off to MSN to report my results.  As luck would have it, 95% of the successful applicants I knew were 1st year students.... which is ironic considering all the BS profs were giving me over reference letters.  Even if they taught me a full semester... it was longer then any 1st year... by 3 whole weeks.  But that aside, I think it was a general vendetta against the non-first year students.  I mean... my GPA wasn't the greatest.. so you could argue that point... but when a 3.8 fails to be selected... somethings wrong...

Moving along to the next phase... the interveiw.  Now... I'm not a judgemental person.... normally.  But honestly some of the people getting interviews worried me.  Almost to the extent that I was wondering how dumb floor meetings would be... if they happened at all... with these people as RAs.  I mean some of them could get lost in shoeboxes, nevermind the piles of snow outside.  Anyways, even for 1st year students there were some strong candidates that I knew.  Residence Life so far had confused me as to their criteria, but I figured they would redeem themselves here.  How wrong was I...  Not only did all the people I know fall flat, but of the people I know who were selected... none made sense.  Well... there was the one pretty boy... but... other then making the girls on a floor swoon... i see no point to him being there.  Seriously... this was a guy who is stumped by Microsoft Powerpoint, and is actually hinted at in a previous blog entry.  Others I found out about... have no social skillz... so how they pass an interview?  I dunno.  Maybe they slept with kissed up to someone in the department.  So that logic was out the window.  Next I thought... maybe grades.  New RA GPA average.... 3.2.  Ok, not too bad... but we had 3.8s that didn't get an interview.... and I know one 3.5 who failed the interview.  So... that doesn't count either.   Maybe personality!  Yeah, that HAS to be it!   Nope... some people who were picked have no personality... or at least... not towards me.  But see... living on campus... you find out... its not just you... others will also say the same thing.... so... there goes that logic.

No matter how much I think about it... there is no logically way Residence Life selected the new RAs.  Maybe they didn't.  Maybe they thought up some weird mathematical equation... or maybe... their leader was a D&D player, and rolled a D20 to see who would be selected.  Cause... when you can TALK your way into an interview (yes... talk...as in you have failed to get one, but because you saw through our silly plan we'll let you in) somethings wrong.  I still think... something is fishy with this.  But I can't prove anything yet... maybe in a few years, we'll hear about students sleeping with I mean... kissing up and returning favours (of all sorts) to the Residence Life people.  It'll be a great story for the school paper.  And who knows... maybe we'll have ANOTHER strike to give us MORE vacation time!

Novel Writings

So... after the natural disaster that was yesterday, today doesn't seem to be going too badly.

I haven' gone sleep in class yet, although... arguably I'm writing this, so I suppose its a matter of what you count as not paying attention.  But in order to destress yesterday, I managed to read some of my old writings I had lying around on my computer.  So, I finished reading, and even finished writing one of them.  So now begins the fun part of editing.  Now editing isn't too bad in and of itself, but Spell check in Microsoft word... is a completely different story.  Between using names that aren't common, and using spoken English oppose to written English, spell check had a field day.  With the names, you can add them to the dictionary... but then you also have to add possessive, and all that other... stuff that is required in the Englsih language, so things get tedious.  And when you have 100+ pagees to go through, it gets kinda boring.  So I have this system now.  Work on a few pages... and then... go do something else that has NOTHING to do with Microsoft Word.  It seems to work pretty well... I get to study a bit... and then have a constructive break.  Of course... .this won't work once assignments begin stacking... NOTHING can ever trump that...

Death by Misadventure...

Ok.... so I haven't written in a while.  But it was in great part not due to my own doing.  Apparently, the University had this site firewalled or some underlying issue, but that's not important at the moment.

Over the past few days, things have been rather busy.  Firstly, some of my fellow Geology majors decided to hike Cape Split.  And by hike Cape Split, I mean through mud and snow and freezing water.  Did I mention it was dark when we finished?  So not only was I tired from thelong hike... I was cold, my feet were wet.... and I was hungry.  But I suppose I survived, that 8:30 class the next day never saw me... but I don't think they missed me too much.

Moving along to Saturday... There was a Snowball Formal.  Now I'm not really one to go to fancy things.  I almost DIDN'T go, but two days before Saturday... the person I'd eventually go with virtually dragged me from meal hall and forced me to buy a ticket.  I still should have said no... but she wasn't taking no for an answer.  And since I've always been told... there's not much worse then a woman's wrath... I decided I might as well justsuck it up and go.  Admittedly, I did have a good time on Friday.  Although, after dancing for 4 hours, you are tired and your feet hurt.  Oh, and its 2am in the morning.

Then... to top off my highly overactive week.... we played squash.  Now... for those of you who don't know what squash is, think of playing tennis... in a box.  And one of the players got a little... upset with points, so they decided to go all out, to the point of nearly splitting the ball.  Now I do physics... which isn't good... and knowing the force required to hit the ball that hard... and the speed required for me to get said ball and return it boggles the mind.  At that point it was just more important to avoid getting stung by the ball, rather then concentrate on hitting it.... cause you never saw it... you only felt it.

I need to get back to Operation Koala... and gaming.  At least those don't use HUGE amounts of energy, and they make you think just as much.... occassionally.

Welcome Back... Acadia Version..

So... after not writing anything here for a while, I'm finally back.  And what a welcome it was.  Not only was I deregistered from all my courses, I couldn't reregister for them as they apparently were all full already.  They send emails out for all the silly little things... maybe... they should start sending them out for important things like this.  In anycase, that took all of the first week to clear up, but I've got a full set of classes now... so its all good.

In other news... no new anime yet.  I haven't watched anything since December, which is kinda bad for me.  There are a few I was supposed ot look at, but I just haven't had the time.  I've gotten a bit of gaming done, just small basic things... nothing major.

As for Angel Thread.... well... that's at a stand still for a bit.  I need to sort out some playtest days with my peoples, who are equally busy as I am... just on different days.  That... and I need to start working on my D20 modern campaign... oh... fun stuff....

Snowball Formal.... went last year... and the probability of me going this year are rapidly declining.  This is mostly due not only to my somewhat hectic schedule this week, but also because its not really my thing.  True a few of my friends are going, but its not enough to make me change my opinion.

Happy New Year.... a new year... with the same old stuff

Angel Thread Update

So....

After a year of tweeking, I say, with a fair amount of certainty that the first set is now complete.  Rules are also just about completed.  Thanks to Terrance, Matt, and Ben K for assisting in the early stages of play testing.  All that's left now is original art work and that might take a while, so I've set out to begin the long road to customisation.

By this I mean, I'm developing what could be called an expansion to the original game.  Its allowing me to put into play the various effects and rules that may not have been tested.  Its also allowing for some of the players to build more diverse decks, instead of people being limited to a few cards.  Its also giving enough diversity that we maybe able to play test team battles and multiplayer games.

Anyways... more on that later.  For now, its back to studying of Biology

Strike!!

So....

After weeks of anticipation, the long awaited strike finally began.  The faculty are picketting outside, while most of the students are enjoying an extended weeked.  I however, have no such luck.  My department apparently was well enough organised that they suckered.... I mean... asked the grad students and TAs to assist in running the labs and classes.  So while most people are aving fun, I've had to study for an exam and do lab reports and such.

*sigh*

Well... at least... after today... *most* of that will be over, and I will *Finally* get some free time

FFXI

So.... after a three week hiatus, I was FINALLY able to log back onto FFXI.  Seeing as there was a besieged, I decided to stick around for a bit.

My chocobo hates me...  I think they need to fix it so that hard workers like me don't lose points because I heed the warning on the game and don't forget that there is a world outside of the game.  So that was bad.  Then I realised that nothing sold at the auction house, and prices went up.... AGAIN!!!!  So.. I was poor and couldn't buy the items I needed to get for leveling the various jobs I had.

I was about to turn it off when the Mamool Ja FINALLY breached the defensive wall.  Then it was down to the blood sweat and tears of a beseiged, and I remembered why I still play Final Fantasy XI.  It was the joy of spending all that good time assisting and killing alongside your fellow adventurers.  When they finally retreated, I remembered all the good times I spent on the game.  It was then I also remembered I was level 38... and just leveled to 39.  And the other 75 players wanted a raise 3... like the idiots they are.

*sigh* I suppose... you can't win them all.  But it was still fun.  I need to do that again!

Return to Normalcy.. Somewhat

So... after a long.... never ending summer of work... work and more work, I am now back to Acadia University.  Oddly enough, things seem a little more tranquil at Acadia then back home, probably because I don't have to deal with airplanes at airports.

Anyways... I'll write later, when I have something to write about.

So......

Ok... so I haven't posted in a very long time.  So contrary to popular belief, I am not dead, but very much alive.  A little very busy... But I'm posting here just to let you know I'm alive... not sure about well.

I finished a long time short story that I had been working on. Very proud of that in my free time.  Also finished off a few games so I'm back down to my normal 2 games I need to finish.

On the down side, I won't get to do a lot of other things like trip to Japan and things I wanted to do.  But there's always next time.  I've got a few years left in university.  There's more time.  ANyways, I'll post again later... when I have more free time

Ciao for niao

Long Time... no Hear

Ok... so I haven't been been on for a while.... mostly due to work commitments and other things.

Now I'm back... but I don't really have much to say...  Just really typing to let you know I'm alive.

The card game I was developing is nearing the completion of a full set, and I maybe able to actually start playing it competitively with others.  Just need a few loose ends to tie up

End of the Year

So... finally... I finished my final exams.  During what seemed like an eternity.  Once I recover, I suppose I can start packing to return home.  The only problem is... thanks to studying for finals, my sleeping habits are completely wrong.  I'm awake @ 3... sleep until 8am... wake up... study... eat something... go back sleep... study... sleep... study... eat... study... sleep... etc.
Thankfully, I have two days here to try correct my sleeping problem, which will need to be corrected quickly.  The ay after I get home, I return to working at an airport, and we can't have me being abnormal there.  Well we could, but it wouldn't be all that good for business and aircrafts in general.

Finals.... Round 2

Final exams should really be named... Death by Degrees.
I'm not sure if its just my really bad luck or what, but for some reason, something drastic always happens during this time.  Last time I was writing finals, I had a 2am fire alarm before a 9 am test.  This time its a math exam on a Saturday Night.  Now I know I should be home studying anyways, but come on... there is a big difference between studying and actually writing a final on a Saturday night.  My weekend is now officially dead.  Not only that, I'll probably be brain dead afterwards because my mind normally takes Saturday as a recovery day.... ie... no large amounts of thinking involed.  So my potentially second worst class.. will have a final on the worst day possible.  Saturday evening, after I may have potentially crash and burned the day before on the final exam for my WORST class....
Oh yeah... someone loves me... I'm sure of it....

Presentations....Group... Presentations

I've never really been a fan of group work.  For some reason I will always get ina group where there is at least one slacker in the group.  So there were not one but two of them.
The first one... admittedly started off pretty good.  We got the research and everything out of the way rather quickly, and were done with a good deal of time to spare.  We all agreed it would probably be a good presentation... that was... until someone suggester Powerpoint.  Now I have no problems some... problems with Microsoft things in general, but nothing that would make me worried about a presentation.  My first hint should have been they let me do up all the slides.  But then again.. we were doing it late at night.. so I was probably sleepy and was rather happy to get them done ASAP.  So... FINALLY the big day arrives... and what happens?  No one knows how to actually RUN Powerpoint.  Well.. I knew how to run it... but when you are only responsible for the knowledge on 4 out of 12 slides... its not good.  The presentation went horribly wrong... and hopefully... it wasn't a bad mark... maybe...

Meanwhile... I had received a second presentation.  This one was to be a short 5 minute spill on birds.  Now everyone knows that 5 minutes can easily be faked... but for some reason.. the guys I was working with insisted on looking up every little detail.  So back down to the library we go.  I'm easily done my 2 slides in a few minutes.  They... are not...  It would take them about 4 hours to do about 4 slides.  I reminded them it only had to be a short presentation, but they insisted they weren't over time (haha... they are trying to get me killed).  In anycase everyone does their slides on separate computers.  While I'm having a nuclear melt down on my first presentation, I leave the compiling of slides to the other members on the second presentation.  Well..... after my nuclear meltdown.. I get back to my room at about 11pm (my presentations class started about 7pm when I left them with the slides)... and what happens... I'm being yelled at there is an emergency...
Once again... Powerpoint has managed to stump University students... and not just any students... Straight A GENIUSES!!!  I'm too tired to bother with them... and I cry at the fact that they can figure out Quantum Physics... Thermodynamics and Calculus... but Microsoft Powerpoint is a major hindrance.  It then makes me wonder.... is a degree really worth it?  Because these guys are obviously smart... but I've had a Powerpoint meltdown twice in as many days....  A problem that took them 5 hours... I solved in 5 minutes.... then I told them... they will do all the talking tomorrow.... no one touches the laptop because two Powerpoint failures is something I don't need....

English 1406

Now... English is my first language... so as some people know... I've been doing English classes FOREVER!!!!
Now... after doing them for so many years... I figure English classes are a HUGE waste of time.  I mean come on.. I think I know how to speak English, and people can understand what I'm trying to say.  Unless I become a writer or a journalist, I seriously doubt anyone will question my written English.  In anycase, I waslooking at my calendar on Sunday and I realise that I had a major research essay due on Thursday.  So I thought... well.. that can't be good....
So I set out on a mission to conquer the daunting task of doing ALL 42+ reading from my English Literature Book.  This was Sunday afternoon....
On monday... I was reminded that I had a math midterm... and mixing math and English is never good... but I tried.....
The big day... Wednesday finally arrived.  I had a Math Midterm... and 11pm.. on Wednesday night.. I'm here putting the finishing touches on my English Research essay!

Long... Live Procrastination!
Mission Accomplished......I'm going to take a nap...

Chinese

So... earlier this year I started learning Chinese.  No big deal, I already am familiar with Japanese, and I have lots of people to bounce what Ive learned in class.  In anycase, I was talking to one of my fellow Chinese students and they suggested that they would read something Iwrote if it were put in Chinese.  It was of course a joke, but today as time would have it, I had some free time.  Igrabbed a dictionary and the article and with my haphazard knowledge of the language, Iproceeded to translate it into a new language.  Now there were two major problems while translating.  One is that the sentence order is reversed in Chinese.  The second is that Iput a few idioms and cliches in the article.  After swearing my great hatred for the English language (something that occurs on a regular basis anyways) I eventually got everything sorted out.  When Iread the translation, it made no sense what so ever to me, but it seemed to be alright for a beginner on the language.  Maybe next time.... I'll just write it in French and then work my way to the more complicated Chinese to take out any idioms or cliches Idon't need.

Mandarin

Another busy time for students like me.
But in a bid to better understand my fellow international students, I decided I was going to take up Mandarin.  Now having mastered basic Japanese, I figured it wouldn't be that much of a trouble speaking Mandarin.  Well... that was before I found out about the four tone system.  According to the person teaching me, there are four tones in Mandarin.  When I hear them speak it.... there is no way you are going to convince me they take out the time to emphasise the four tones... I onlyhear one.  So I'm sitting in class and we do numbers.  I think the end is in sight as numbers are fairly easy and aren't made up of any complex tonal pronounciations.  It was then my Japanese really came back to haunt me.

Some Japanese characters are based off Chinese characters.  The numbers are a prime example.  They are written the same in both Chinese and Japanese, but they have total different pronounciations.... except for one number....  THree is pronounced the same in both Mandarin and Japanese, so when I started counting, I got up to three and suddenly, almost instinctively proceeded to count 4-7 in Japanese.  I only stopped when the person teaching gave me an odd look of confusion and I realised I had switched languages.

*Sigh* I don't expect languages to be easy to learn, and I do hate English very much... but I can see.... Mandarin is going to be like playing a piano.... you need to keep your thoughts separate

Card Game

While helping a friend to create a Final Fantasy Card Game, I wound up spinning off and creating a new game.  It hasn't been named yet, so we all just call it... THe Game for now.  During initial play testing all is going fairly well with the new game.  There have been a few minor hiccups, but thats what play testing is for.  Overall, the game has been fairly enjoyable which is also a good sign.  There haven't been any major complaints yet, and its simple enough that one play tester has even explained how to play to another new player.  I have to complete the final bit  of the first set of cards before I can "officially" play anything, but that will come in time.
Resident Evil Card Game that a friend is developing looks cool too.  It can be a little bit one sided if the right cards are drawn, but its cool none the less.

Spring Break.... eerrr... reading week

After all this great hype of "Spring Break" I was happy that it finally had rolled around, and I thought I'd get a rest and relaxation done.

Well... I was... very... very.. wrong.  Ever since midterms, I've had to do assignment, after assignment.  I've studied a great deal, read some bits and pieces, and written not one but two essays.  Ok.. so one of the essays was my own doings, but its still... a lot of reading and energy involved.  It was then it occurred to me, teh genius who named it READING WEEK opose to Spring break might have been onto something grand, and as such referred to it so.

On the flip side, I have had some small bits of fun.  Mostly involving making fun of my fellow international students.  Well, operation koala hasn't been a complete failure, but its running very border line right now.  I'm supposed ot wake up early to go out with my fellow international students.... but... we'll have to see how that goes.

Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles

Ok... beleive it or not, I was looking for Valentines Day cards when I happened across this DVD.  Being the avid Macross (note Macross not Robotech... there is a difference) fan I am I decided to give it a shot.

I honestly didn't expect much out of it.  After all... it was Robotech trying to add on to some of the original series.  I popped it in and loaded it up.  Perhaps math wasn't the best of subjects to work on while watching the movie for the first time, but I'd have to say it was an ok movie.  On a scale of 1-10... I'd say it was around 7.5 or 8.  It makes great use of CG graphics and looks very modern.  The plot ran rather smoothly from the original series, and if you've read the comics the transitiion seems even smoother.  Looking from a Robotech standpoint, there are a few negligible little plot holes that make the movie worthwhile to get.

However... if you are a Macross fan... you may want to rent first.  There are a small subtle differences that might throw you off, especially if you have seen all the way up to Macross 7.  There are small hints made at Macross Plus which also technically occurs before Macross 7 that you might want to make notes of.  There are things that I won't go into detail about here to avoid spoiling the movie for any one who may want to purchase it.... but Macross fans be warned.

Over all though... the movie was ok.  Nothing was glaringly bad about it since it is Robotech.  Even if you are new to the Robotech name, you should probably get this, but only after watching the original Robotech series as that will clear up a lot of plot points for you.  If you don't have time... the movie is still enjoyable without the background knowledge, but the background knowledge would help you a long way.  If you like CG style animations then you'll LOVE this show.  That's my two cents... enjoy the movie!

Midterm Madness

Well... after a long hard road.... I've completed my first round of midterms.   Although I should go to class for the rest of the week... I'm not overly compelled to... because... I need a break... and everyone else is doing tests.  Tomorrow is a real acid test as it contains the class with my worst attendence record... so I'll prolly be skipping that.

On another note... replaying Suikoden 4 and 5.  Suikoden 4 final boss was just as painful as before.  For some reason Suikoden 5 didn't seem that bad.  It probably because I didn't have some heavy nukers the first time I finished the game.... maybe.  Anyways... I'm gone take a nap.  I had to postpone Operation Koala due to midterms.  With them now complete... I have no problem resuming.... 18 hours of sleep here I come!
