So-called "tool"-programs, also called "utilities", can facilitate the life of a computer owner considerably. In principle, tools are simple computer programs, such as every other program. However the term "tool" or "utility" is usually assigned to particularly useful programs.

Many of these programs are available free of charge on the Internet. Since both the terms “tool” and “utility” are not protected, everyone that writes a program might call it tool or utility. Thus, there are some black sheep among the free programs. They often contain Malware (like viruses, Worms or Trojans)  or Spyware. In addition, most of these free programs are so-called Shareware, which one can test only during a short period. After that period, one is almost forced to purchase the product if one wishes to continue using it. But there are also professional tools and utilities, like those that one can acquire.
