Wednesday, October 4, 2006 - Lost in Translation
With the increase in technology and communications in America, there are debates about whether or not our social morality and ethics are being "lost in the translation" or if we are creating a full fledged globalization. Yes, I understand that globalization happens everyday but through what portal? Economically we are at a new apex every hour. The global index is skyrocketing and people can receive a call from anywhere in the world and it is no big deal. But what is happening socially? How about this scenario; two people at a restaurant, one is alone, and the other is with their wife/husband. After the lone person orders their food, they get on their cell phone and call a friend so that they are not alone but are at the same time. Now the couple at the other table has ordered their food and they are talking about some hot topic in politics. The situations are derived from the same social behaviors, both are “socializing” but situational circumstances indicate that the lone person is not communicating in the same sense some how. Is it through technology? In a sense, yes, But on the other hand something is lost when the person on the phone calls the other. One, the person on the other line has just received a phone call, the conversation was an expected thing on one end, but the other person did not know the lone person was going to call. The two people are communicating differently because of the situation of communication! The couple on the other hand is both predisposed to the idea that they were there to communicate and look each other in the eyes and understand each other, but I digress.
People have different ideas and standard mentality, and everyone is different. There has always been that gap and there always will be. But more recently people have grown apart from each other and the things that used to be logical, as a basis for communication, have changed. People communicate on a basis of givens, or logical information. Cave men communicated through drawings, because they all had eyes (obviously) and they knew what the drawings were of because they looked like something they had already experienced and had felt feelings towards. And in this day and age, there is such a diversity of people and cultures that people can’t communicate as in; express feelings through different methods. The same sense may be communicated but the feelings and background of the communicated piece are not understood by the person receiving the information. So everyone is speaking from a different view point and that creates obstacles in our culture and other cultures that communicate with one another, hence all the political struggles and miscommunication. Being politically correct is becoming a huge debate and it all stems from our ability to communicate our thoughts and ideas without being misinterpreted and misunderstood. How can we change this ever growing problem? Get to know people for who they really are. Cross social boundaries and reach out to people who view things differently from you. Try and understand where they are coming from and keep an open mind. Most of all respect everyone’s differences, take time out to find your own language and don’t get lost in translation.

Monday, October 2, 2006 - are we taking cultural sensitivity too seriously?
circumstances recently have made it abundantly clear that in this day and age, people are waaay too sensitive about race, orgin, and any other cultural differences that may be disscused. I feel like i cant say anything without offending someone. just this weekend i was talking to someone on here about immigration, and i refered to one of my good friends as "brown" and now this person i was debating will no longer talk to me because he sees me as a biggot and a racist bastard!!! I love all people equally. yes, i realize that it might hurt people by what i say, but i cant live my life wondering and trying not to offend someone. now i know cultural norms and such from which i should abide by yet i know that some things are just getting out of hand. a famous laywer made a statement in court in 2005 that the common phrase "politically correct" or "pc" is "culturally insensite and a offensive phrase!!!! can you believe that? and thanks to PCphrases.com i have copied a list of terms and YOU tell me what you think about it. i will expand on this topic tomorrow.
