2005 Chris Austin Songwriting Contest at MerleFest
On March 16, 1991, only a few hours after the recording of his "Same Ol' Love," Chris Austin from Boone, North Carolina Chris was killed in a tragic plane accident near San Diego along with other members of Reba McEntire's band as well as her tour manager. Pete Fisher, then of WarnerSongs and currently general manager of the Grand Ole Opry, and then MerleFest consultant and "Pickin' for Merle" video associate producer Kari Estrin initiated the Chris Austin Songwriting Contest to honor the memory of Austin. The Chris Austin Songwriting Contest invites three finalists in each of the four categories to come to MerleFest for the finals. 2008 SXSW

Black Potatoe Records
Black Potatoe Records is an independent record label based out of Clinton, New Jersey, founded in 1988 by artist Matthew Angus with one mission: to support the independent artist.  Since then over 20 titles have been released on Black Potatoe Records featuring some of New Jersey's best independent talent. The releases have ranged from folk to reggae artists, and also include live and studio compilations of non-Black Potatoe artists. The artists with Black Potatoe have toured throughout the U.S., worked with national acts, received respectable airplay with stations who support independent acts, and received excellent press reviews and coverage.
